It comes down to more than just money…
Businesses and tradesmen can often be stubborn or fickle to work with. Many are busy, inexperienced with your specific need, or not interested in a job the size you need done. Instead of being straightforward about this, the tendency is to give you a “go-away” price. If you only get one quote, you cannot be sure you are getting a fair deal. It can also be harder to know how sleazy the salesman is without context, my mom got burned pretty hard when she got a new roof when I was away in college, she only got 1 quote. She didn’t read the contract either. Don’t be like my mom with your next project.
Say you wise up to this and get 2 quotes, that is an improvement but if the quotes are wildly different, how do you know which quote is more reputable? The cheaper quote could be from a company that is planning on cutting corners or is underestimating the cost of the job. The latter of which often causes contractors to try to jump ship mid-project, which is the last place you want to find yourself.
Once you get 3 quotes from reputable businesses you can generally find the outliers that are overcharging or undercharging and pick one of the other 2. While you could get more than three, I find that there is diminishing returns compared to the time you spend to do so.
